The Pearl
by John Hilligoss

I've uncovered a pearl, a pearl so rare;
But what can I do with it, I've not a nickel to spare,
I could polish it up, and make it shine like a gem,
But it's real beauty lies, in the condition it's in,
I could leave it, or sell it, or show it in town, or
I could take bids on this beautiful pearl
That I have found,
Why did I find it, and what should I do,
I'm holding it right now, I think I'll give it to you.
It's real beauty lies, in whatever you see,
So when you are finished with it,
Please give it to someone for me,
It's in the shape of a poem, and it sounds
Like a song, and you must except it now
For I must move on,
Just remember, you could polish it, so it would
Shine like a gem, but it's real beauty
lies in the condition it's in.
